There’s a place you might never have been too, consisting of 4 miles of trails and 200 acres of forest. This place is called Ferncliff Forest.

Ferncliff is located on Mount Rutsen Road. This is one of the roads that connects River Road and Route 9 in Rhinebeck, almost behind the hospital.

How did Ferncliff Forest become public use land?

Apparently there’s a long story about the Astor family (who have deep roots in the Hudson Valley) who acquired land over many years and then turned it over to the next of kin until the early 1990s. 1960, when Rotary leader Rhinebeck asked Mrs. Astor to leave the land to them. She agreed, but stipulated that it would have to be forest property until the end of time.

Ferncliff has six trails, all marked and groomed. As a bonus, one of the trails leads you to the fire tower, which you can climb.

Believe it or not, you can camp there, because there are dedicated spaces. Keep in mind though that this is a take out area. You might even notice the large number of people using the trails for fat-biking.
