Located on the magnificent Côte Fleurie— “Côte des Fleurs” —de
Normandy
Deauville has been an upscale vacation spot for wealthy French and international tourists since the 1800s, attracting celebrities, well-heeled Parisians and avid horse riders, drawn to the region for its world-famous stud farms and horse racing.

Nicknamed “the queen of Norman beaches”, it is one of the most prestigious seaside resorts in France, known for its historic half-timbered houses, its large casino and its vast golf courses, its wide sandy beach and its numerous luxury hotels, boutiques, restaurants and spas.

Deauville has seen a huge real estate boom over the past two years as buyers looking for large family properties with expansive land and access to the sea have skyrocketed demand, local brokers have said.

“The particularity of Deauville is that it is a seaside town with Anglo-Norman charm. It is highly sought after by the French and in particular by the Parisians, ”said Sandra Sabah, team leader at Engel & Völkers Deauville. “Here, you have very beautiful properties, manors and stud farms, because it is truly an equestrian city, with very diverse architecture.

Limits

Deauville is roughly bounded by the La Touques river to the east, by the Barrière Deauville golf course to the south, by the Deauville cemetery and rue de Gheest to the west and by the Channel to the north. It is surrounded by small villages which come under its jurisdiction, including the neighbors Bénerville, Tourgéville, Trouville-sur-Mer and Bernerville-sur-Mer.

Price scale

Bénédicte Belvisi, associate director of Barnes Deauville, said the historic properties in central Deauville and the grand country mansions just outside the city are also in demand.

“In Deauville, you can find family villas with a garden between 1 and 4 million euros (1.18 to 4.72 million dollars),” she said. “In the countryside around Deauville you have villages like Tourgéville, Saint-Pierre-Asif and Beaumont-en-Auge, where people are more looking for family properties with at least four or five bedrooms, tennis courts and swimming pools. , whose prices are between 1 million euros and 3 million euros, depending on the facilities and condition.

In central Deauville, the most exclusive area is known as the Golden Triangle, Ms Sabah said. Bordered by the Hippodrome de la Touques, it is located between the Hotel Normandy and the Hotel Barrière Le Royal Deauville.

“In this area you will find very beautiful Anglo-Norman style houses, which date from the end of the 19th century. The starting price for these properties is 1.5 million euros for around 200 square meters, ”she said. Historic Anglo-Norman houses with slate roofs, stone walls and traditional half-timbering can sell for up to 3 million euros, she added.

Another neighborhood is Boulevard Cornuché, where apartments with sea views range from € 7,000 to € 14,000 per square meter, she said.

Housing stock

“The most sought-after luxury properties are the sea view villas, which appeal to clients looking to buy in Deauville and all of Deauville’s immediate surroundings,” said Ms. Belvisi. “The properties with large plots and beautiful countryside and sea views are mainly located at Mont Canisy, which is a much sought after high altitude area. Here you will find large properties of up to 500 square meters with many acres of land, swimming pools, tennis courts and other luxury amenities.

The diversity of properties is suitable for a wide range of buyers.

“Luxury homes in the heart of Deauville often have medium-sized gardens and a few have swimming pools and gymnasiums,” Ms. Sabah said. In Deauville, the most sought-after properties are traditional historic Anglo-Norman houses, but the city has surprisingly diverse offerings, including studs, mansions and modern villas, she said.

You can even find English, Scandinavian, Gothic, and Moorish architecture. “This is what makes Deauville so original and charming. Each neighborhood has its own character, ”she said.

What makes it unique

With its port, beautiful sandy beach, marinas and casino, Deauville has long attracted French high society and is often referred to as the Parisian Riviera. The town is famous for its seaside promenade, which dates back to the 1920s and is lined with quaint beach huts. Featured in Marcel Proust’s iconic novel “In Search of Lost Time”, Deauville has a lot of historic charm but has resolutely modern amenities. Every September, it hosts the American Film Festival, attracting international celebrities and critics.

It is best known for its equestrian events. “Horse racing, horse sales, horseback riding, major equestrian sports competitions: Deauville and its region live all year round to the rhythm of the horse,” said Ms. Sabah.

Luxury amenities

Thanks to its location, Deauville has many amenities. “There is golf, sailing, tennis, all types of sports teams and activities related to physical well-being, but you can easily come to Deauville just to relax and have fun,” Ms. Sabah.

The city also offers excellent health and education infrastructure. “There are plenty of good doctors and surgeons and there is a very large medical center just outside Deauville. There are schools for students of all ages and also private schools, ”she added.

Deauville is full of “chic boutiques, including Hermès and Louis Vuitton, and plenty of very beautiful historic hotels,” said Ms. Belvisi. Among the city’s excellent restaurants, some have Michelin stars. The result of a fruitful collaboration between French chef Charles Tuillant and Korean chef Mi-Ra, Michelin-starred L’Essential offers contemporary and creative Norman cuisine with a Korean touch. Maximin Hellio, located near the port of Deauville, bases its Michelin-starred menu on local products, including freshly caught seafood. The Michelin guide also highlights the seafood restaurants L’Etoile des Mers and La Flambée.

Who lives here

During the week, Deauville is a sleepy seaside town, with a year-round population of just 3,700. “It’s a city that comes alive during the holidays and on weekends,” Ms. Sabah said, adding that 72% of local properties are second homes. Most are owned by Parisians looking for a coastal getaway. Since the pandemic, however, many have chosen to sell their primary residence in Paris and move to Deauville full time.

The city also attracts Europeans, including buyers from the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland, Ms Belvisi said.

The historic properties in central Deauville and the grand country mansions just outside the city are also in demand.

Notable residents

Famous residents of Deauville included the late French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and the Rothschilds, according to published reports.

“There are a lot of well-known personalities in France, including actors like Gérard Depardieu, Claude Lellouch, singer Michel Sardou, actresses like Isabelle Adjani and Claudia Cardinale, and we also have a lot of French politicians who have their residence secondary. in Deauville, ”said Ms. Sabah.

Following: Open spaces, historic homes and rising prices define Australia’s capital, Canberra

Outlook

The pandemic has caused an unsustainable boom. “We’ve seen a lot of sales over the past two years, so demand has exceeded supply, which has pushed up prices sharply,” Ms. Belvisi said. “Deauville remains very popular but we cannot continue to see the same price increase that we have seen over the past two years. She said more properties are expected to hit the market in the coming months as sellers looking to buy overseas will find the option to travel again.

Ms Sabah said residents who live in Deauville year-round are unable to compete with the purchasing power of wealthy Parisian buyers, excluding them from the local market and forcing them to stay in their current accommodation. “To some extent, the real estate market has become a victim of its own success as today supply has fallen to 29%, while demand has increased to 53%. We have a lot of demand and not enough houses and apartments to meet it.

As Grant explains, this moment for black jewelers is long overdue: from the mainland. Almost all of the designers are new to Sotheby’s and most have created new pieces exclusively for the occasion, taking advantage of this decisive opportunity to share their know-how and creativity with a wide audience. Need a relaxing vacation? We’ve all been subjected to a lot of “inner time lately,” and we don’t blame you if you are fed up with it. We crave fresh air, sun, sand, stunning views, and most importantly, a break away from the crowds and the concrete.

Where can you find all of this without crossing borders or being overbooked by competitive Queensland travelers? The always picturesque Gympie region.

Gympie and its beautiful surroundings are home to some of Queensland’s most pristine scenery and epic adventures, stretching from the Cooloola coast to the west. It literally ticks all the boxes on the nature front, offering incredible beaches, rainforests and backcountry. Best part? No concrete or crowds in sight. Just you, farm-fresh produce and the natural beauty that Gympie has to offer.

Ready to explore? Here are a few reasons why Gympie should be your next getaway.

Swim on one of the most scenic beaches in the world

How could we start this list other than singing the praises of Rainbow Beach? Named after its towering multicolored sand cliffs, this piece of paradise has enchanted travelers from all over the world. Being ranked as one of Australia’s best beaches and one of the most scenic in the world, it’s no mystery why Rainbow Beach should be on every Queenslander’s travel checklist.

4×4 with epic waves

Want to inject some adventure into your days at the beach? Load up the Landy and don’t forget the boards. Double Island Point is only accessible by 4×4 and has some of Australia’s best surf waves. Once you’ve had your fill of exploring the island off-road and surf, head to Honeymoon Bay Lagoon at low tide for relaxing vibes and an easy swim, AKA your private oasis on the island. Isle.

Hit the trails

Whether you’re ready for a leisurely walk in the rainforest or a 50+ mile bike ride along an old train line, Gympie’s hike and bike game is strong. We’re talking tracks and trails through all kinds of scenery at all levels of difficulty. Where else could you take a beach birding walk and a rainforest hike to scenic swimming spots on the same day? We recommend the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail or the Cooloola Great Walk for multi-day trail enthusiasts. For an easy walk, try the River to Rail Trail, Mary Valley Rail Trail, Foreshore Birdwalk, and Wildflower Walk near the Cooloola Coast.

Saddle up for a bush tour

Is your childhood obsession with horses still going strong? Discover Gympie on horseback on one of their iconic equestrian trails. If you’re new to horseback riding, we recommend taking a day trip to the rainforest or going down Rainbow Beach at sunset. For the true horse lovers among you, you can find week-long beach and bush tours that will have you galloping by day and check in at quaint B & B’s at night for a luxury equestrian experience.

Set up a tent under the stars

Your perfect camping trip awaits. With the Gympie region sprawling across farmland, lush rainforest, and scenic coastline, there is no shortage of beautiful places to pitch a tent and sleep among nature. Our top picks for campsites are Inskip for sand bonfire vibes, Amamor State Forest for lush, forested surroundings, and Borumba Dam for creek camping with l deer feed on the side. Just pick your favorite backdrop and sit back for a clear view of the stars that you just can’t get in town.

Paddle through pristine waterways

Something Gympie doesn’t miss? Pristine streams just begging to be explored. Kayak or paddleboard the Mary River to spot turtles and platypus, head out to the Coral Sea to paddle with dolphins, dugongs, sea turtles and whales, or head over to the one of the many beautiful lakes of Gympie for a fishing trip or a refreshing swim.

Eat, drink and take in the view

One of the best things about Gympie that you can’t avoid is the amazing food on offer. Discover the fresh local flavors from the spring on one of the many agricultural trails available. For a more refined dining experience, many restaurants serve five-star meals with views to match. Browse the flavors of Mary Valley for paddock-to-plate freshness you won’t find anywhere else, or head to the coast for next-level seafood feasts. Because what a relaxing vacation is complete without decadent meals in beautiful surroundings?

Ready to trade the urban jungle for beaches, bush and an enviable slow life? Plan your trip to the pristine wilderness of the Gympie region here.

Australia’s social calendar looks a bit sparse right now with birthdays, anniversaries and celebratory dinners pending. However, you can’t stop a girl from dreaming, planning her outfit and … hmm … online shopping.

The shopping destination at the top of our list? The new online fashion store from Dior Dior.com.

Spring has arrived and from September 14, thanks to the luxury fashion house’s local e-commerce destination, we can now have Dior delivered directly to our door.

To our delight, Dior’s equestrian-inspired Saddle bag is available for purchase in styles and colors to suit any occasion. A favorite of the 2000s icon and Sex and the city protagonist Carrie Bradshaw, and relaunched in 2018 with great success, the saddle bag can be styled and worn in multiple ways. One size up is the small DiorTravel zip pouch which can hold all the essentials on its own or can be slipped into your favorite handbag. If a small pouch doesn’t do the trick, the DiorTravel pouch should do the trick with its drawstring closure allowing more room for your things; with a removable strap, you can wrap it around your wrist on your adventures away from home.

(From left to right): Lady Dior My ABCDIOR Bag in Cannage Pink Yarrow lambskin, $ 7,300; Gray embroidered velvet Mizza headband, $ 1,200; Small Dior Book tote in gray Mizza embroidered velvet, $ 5,100; all of Dior.com.

Cinema is never all about storytelling and acting – some of the muses that adorn our screens are even styled so impeccably that they stay in our imaginations long after the credits roll. The stellar costume designers are behind these sartorial perfection fictional characters, but audiences will always associate this green dress or bespoke tailcoat with the character himself.

RELATED: 10 Netflix Shows With The Best Costume Design

From Villanelle to Holly Golightly to Tyler Durden, cinema has spawned some of the most iconic style icons over the years. Here’s the crème de la crème of the many fictional universes of feature films, sitcoms and TV series that have taken the fashion world by storm.

ten Villanelle – Kill Eve

Amid exotic locations, murderous teenagers, brutal golf sessions and dreamy apartments, Kill Eve‘s Villanelle does not forget to be the most elegant in the best outfits. The International Assassin had an enviable wardrobe, full of Gucci tartans, ’70s Halpern suits, and Chloe equestrian outfits.

Villanelle’s specialty was her ability to surprise audiences with deliciously paradoxical fashion choices. She might appear in a frothy pink dress at one point during a psychological assessment, and in a leather shirt while setting up a potential kill in the next.

9 Andy Sachs – The Devil Wears Prada

the devil-door-prada-reunion-03

Who doesn’t love a makeover from messy to trendy, and no one has made the film’s trope better than Andrea Sachs. The journalism graduate thought she was too good for fashion, until she wasn’t, then came out the Chanel boots, chic overlays, and trim silhouettes.

of the track her favorite assistant went from worst to best dressed in seconds – her all-white winter ensemble, newsboy hat, black minidress, and tall boots were some of the highlights of Andy’s new and improved closet.

8 Tyler Durden – Fight Club

The eccentric and chaotic Tyler Durden was not only an anti-capitalism messiah, but also a fashion icon in his own right. Grungy but laid back, her colorful tropical shirts and vibrant tees clashed with the ubiquitous crimson leather jacket so much that she looked really good.

Brad Pitt’s effortless look went against the hyper masculine grain of the ’90s, which was a bold choice to make for the time, and resulted in a timeless aesthetic. The jumped collars and red sunglasses don’t bother us either.

7 Cruella De Vil – Cruella

Cruella red dress

Punk, military, princess grunge and evening elegance – Cruella’s style is hard to compartmentalize in one box. Cruella’s outfits were second to none, and she is perhaps the most recent style icon on fashion lists. Sweet Estella herself had understated yet chic looks, but her outing as Cruella unleashed the fashion genius within her.

Think geometric shapes in improbable fabrics like leather, vintage accessories like chokers and lace gloves, voluminous dresses with newspaper print trains, baroque masks, punk rock chains and buttons brought together by this black and white hairstyle.

6 Blair Waldorf – Gossip Girl

It’s no secret that Blair Waldorf wore some of the best outfits in Gossip Girl, if not the history of television series. Her classic rich girl style did not look dressy, but sleek and polished. From preppy sailor girl dresses to bodycon silk negligee dresses, this Upper East Side teenager could do it all.

The most distinctive aspect of Blair’s aesthetic was that it was completely original. She took inspiration from her idol Audrey Hepburn, but every bandeau, every preppy dress and every structured coat screamed authenticity and sophistication.

5 Vivian Ward – Pretty Woman

Vivian Ward captured Edward’s heart with her lively personality, but audiences fell head over heels in love with her fashion, and not just after getting Edward’s credit card. From the latex dress with cutouts on Rodeo Drive and tall boots to the delicate feminine dresses she bought on her shopping spree, Vivian killed the scene with her aesthetic.

Her red ball gown and brown polka dot derby look were highlights, but nothing was more satisfying than when she berated the posh shop clerk who had previously unceremoniously dumped her for being an escort.

4 Holly Golightly – Breakfast at Tiffany’s

woman in sunglasses and black dress holding coffee

Most imitated icon, Audrey Hepburn’s Holly Golightly is a fashion dean. Her most recognized look is the black Givenchy sheath, filled with a bunch of pearls around her neck, sunglasses and that quintessential fringe.

Outside his set to look at the windows at Tiffany’s, Holly’s flaming pink birthday dress, her white nightgown with the turquoise eye mask and her trench coat as she searches for Cat have been etched in the collective memory of fashionistas around the world.

3 Rachel Green – Friends

split image of Rachel Green from Friends

With the resurgence of ’90s fashion in public consciousness, Rachel Green’s fashion is even more prominent today than ever. Alluring slip dresses, fitted ribbed crop tops, sweetheart blouses, plaid skirts and shiny coats – you name it, and Rachel rocked the outfit. Friends.

Combined with this iconic haircut, Rachel managed to get her hair done and show off her sense of style. Most of her outfits are coming back to our closets, proving that fashion is truly cyclical, and Rachel Green, as Taylor Swift said, will never go out of style.

2 Tommy Shelby – Peaky Blinders

This Birmingham Kingpin may have had humble beginnings, but wealth doesn’t determine sartorial skills. Tommy Shelby teaches the public the art of everyday dressing, but with enthusiasm.

The twenties, for Tommy, were full of crisp suits, tight-fitting vests, heavy overcoats, dress shirts and pins that added the finishing touches. Her wardrobe didn’t differ much every day, but textures and neutrals did change from time to time.

1 Serena Van Der Woodsen – Gossip Girl

If fans didn’t identify with Blair’s preppy style, they were drawn to this It Girl’s bohemian, traveling wardrobe. Puffy dresses, swaying tassels, gold frills and hobo bags dominated the everyday clothes of this fashionista, but usually great designers.

Everything about Serena was memorable, especially the little details. Her school uniform best reflected her fiery personality, and no one can forget that once she braided the tassel of her graduation cap into her hair, instead of wearing the hat. Legendary.

New York is the concrete jungle where (fashion) dreams are made. After five hectic days, New York Fashion Week has passed, leaving in its wake an impressive spring / summer collection of 91 collections that have undoubtedly started to make their way into the cultural zeitgeist.

Last season’s storefront was filled with a number of styles that every “It Girl” will be wearing for the coming season. Long and short? In no time at all, we’ll be channeling the minimalist yet pragmatic designs of the New York style ensemble, including Sandy Liang, Peter Do, Proenza Schouler, and Altuzarra.

There was also a strong emphasis on the retrospective – we saw people like LaQuan Smith, Brandon Maxwell and Christian Cowan revert to the ideals of bygone eras, an almost “roaring 2020” where debauchery and drama are paramount and l opulence and extravagance reign supreme.

The themes of community, the urge to travel and mother earth were also present, after 18 months at home it seems like there is no better inspiration than our own backyard. In particular, Collina Strada, Rodarte, Tory Burch, Coach, Ksubi and Gabriela Hearst referred to the microjays of the banal in their presentations.

For the best trends spotted on the New York Fashion Week catwalk, continue reading below.

Apparently, equestrian clothing is making a comeback, if ever it has been in fashion. Channel your inner horse girl (we’re Stevie from Saddle Club) with looks inspired by the jockeys seen at Maisie Wilen and literal ponytails at Collina Strada. More subliminal were the botanical motifs spotted in Rodarte and Anna Sui.

New York is known for its kids’ clubs and nightclubs, and if the collections of LaQuan Smith and Christian Cowan have anything to do with it, NYC is up to the party. We’re ready to let go and don our best LBDs. We are witnessing a hot vaxxed summer.

Minimalist collections from Jonathan Simkhai, Peter Do and even Altuzarra offered a contemporary solution for the modern bride with a range of cream and blush dresses that can be worn on the big day and beyond.

The hat industry is making a comeback, with many flamboyant and ostentatious hats sent to the runway. While LaQuan Smith and Christian Cowan opted for wide-brimmed numbers adorned with feathers, Kim Shui argued for the return of the cowboy hat.

Nods to exotic travel and destinations were evident throughout Fashion Week. Whether it’s the reopening of New York or the fact that New Yorkers haven’t been able to leave their apartments for over a year, designers have sorted out your vacation essentials. From necklaces at Proenza Schouler to caftans at Anna Sui, we dream of escape.

You might have walked the streets in Sam Edelman’s ever-fashionable kicks, but now you’ll feel the mark too. Presentation Signature of Sam Edelman ($ 68), the brand’s very first eau de parfum.

Available for purchase from September 15th, this fragrance has a special way to transport us on vacation, and all thanks to top notes of mimosa accord and airy flowers, heart notes of margarita foam. and green florals and base notes of heartwood and sandalwood.

“The notes are undeniably unique and share the same irreverence and whimsy as the brand, while capturing important characteristics of our heritage,” co-founder Sam Edelman tells exclusively NewBeauty. “The margarita foam and green flowers come from green colored substances, just like our own signature pantone. Wood is another important note and an element that is often reflected in the brand’s ethics with our equestrian influences, craftsmanship and architectural design inspiration.

Beautifully molded into the shape of a high heel, raw materials were used to design the sculpture-like upper and base. According to the brand, the idea behind the design was to embody the modern elegance that is so vital to their label. On the other hand, the engineering that took place inside the bottle involved fragrance designer Raymond Matts, who worked alongside The Principe perfumer from Firmenich Frank Voelkl to create the fragrance. As the brand says, spraying this scent should evoke a sense of empowerment, akin to the feeling of going out in a pair of heels.

“As a designer, I only think of my love to share the many places, people and things that have inspired me throughout my career, to tell my story,” says Edelman. “To me, scent is inclusive and timeless, but in a very different way from how a designer tells their story through clothes and shoes. While he has compiled years of inspiration in this bottle, his journey to create begins with his wife and brand co-founder, Libby Edelman. “She embodies the effortless elegance, the spirit of well-being and the ambitious style that I convey in fashion and now in perfume.

We’ve never looked down on our hands, sighed and wished our manicure matched our Birkin, but the wealthy will be delighted to hear that Hermes is launching a line of nail polish.

On October 15, the French house will expand its beauty footprint with a collection of 24 hairsprays, as well as nail brushes and other manicure tools that are reminiscent of the brand’s equestrian heritage (because the super rich want to treat their hands like horse hooves, apparently).

The crown jewel of the collection is a nail polish that reproduces the iconic orange hue of Hermès. The tangerine shade is also applied to what we can only assume to be the fanciest nail file around.

If Hermès is a fairly classic brand, one cannot help but wonder how it missed the opportunity to market its manicure line as unisex. Images for the upcoming line-up noticeably omit male and gender-non-conforming models, a confusing choice given the multitude of beauty brands – most recently YSL Beauty – scrambling to launch more inclusive marketing campaigns.

Plus, manicure tools don’t have the same gendered connotations as, say, eye shadow or lipstick. Expanding the line to a wider consumer base would seem like a pretty obvious – and profitable – decision, but alas, we’re not making the rules.

It’s pretty common these days for men to wear nail polish – A $ AP Rocky, Harry Styles, and Post Malone are just a few male celebrities who flaunt enviable manicures. Lil Yachty even launched his own nail polish brand, Crete, which boasts the Telfar-esque slogan, “For You. Not Them”.

Of course, much of Hermes’ DNA is built on exclusivity, which is essentially the only reason someone willingly spends over $ 10,000 on a Birkin bag. Hermès nail polish will set you back $ 45 a bottle – much more affordable than a Birkin, but still prohibitively expensive for a large population.

In a phenomenal final day of track cycling, Great Britain sold out, winning gold medals and setting world records in all three event finals. There were moving scenes at the Izu velodrome after the British team won five medals in total, with Lora and Neil Fachie becoming the golden couple of ParalympicsGB, while Jody Cundy, Kadeena Cox and Jaco Van Gass have ended the day with a triumph in the mixed team sprint.

It was the most exciting race of the day, as the British team were the underdog for China, which set a world record in qualifying. Cox, who won gold in the C4-5 500m time trial on Friday, gave the team a great start in the opening two laps, but as she gave way to Van Gass to take the head, the Chinese contingent has increased the stake.

By the time Van Gass left the runway for Cundy to anchor, there was work to be done. But Cundy, no doubt motivated by angst about giving up his individual Paralympic title on Thursday, recovered from the 0.566 second delay on an astonishing 250m final – helping to set a new world record of 47.57 seconds to finish a tenth of a second ahead of China.

They followed the Fachie family, who started the gold rush in both events for visually impaired athletes. Neil Fachie came first, reclaiming the title he had lost in Rio five years ago in the B 1000m time trial. He and rider Matthew Rotherham did it in style, breaking the world record. de Fachie, while teammate James Ball won silver with driver Lewis Stewart. Lora Fachie came next, successfully defending her Paralympic title in the 3000m B individual pursuit, with rider Corrine Hall.

Understanding horses: the healing horse https://ohalloranco.com/understanding-horses-the-healing-horse/ https://ohalloranco.com/understanding-horses-the-healing-horse/#respond Mon, 23 Aug 2021 19:05:41 +0000 https://ohalloranco.com/understanding-horses-the-healing-horse/ There has been a lot of buzz on the interwebs lately about a horse nicknamed “Doctor” Peyo. There has been a lot of buzz on the interwebs lately about a horse nicknamed “Doctor” Peyo. He is fifteen, a former dressage competitor, and he visits terminally ill cancer patients in a hospital in France. Apparently it’s her decision, her owner is just coming as an escort. He decides which patient he will see by raising a front paw at the door. Then he spends as much time as he wants with the patient.

Peyo is an imposing animal. He’s tall, as competition dressage horses often are, and he’s a stallion, with a really impressive neckline (which is one of the secondary sex characteristics of an intact male horse). It looks like one of San Marco horses, or one Baroque equestrian portrait. And yet, it is wonderfully soft.

Much of the buzz about him has focused on how unique and unusual he is and there may be something different about his brain. The articles I have seen do not seem to acknowledge that therapy horses are not particularly rare; like other therapy animals, they often visit hospitals and nursing homes. It’s not just miniature horses or ponies. A former neighbor of mine in Tucson has been doing care visits for decades with a succession of carriage horses including a few Clydesdales of the Budweiser herd. The first of these would have eclipsed Peyo. He weighed 2000 pounds of pure sweetness.

Personally, I would love to see larger studies of therapy horses around the world, to see if Peyo really is a cut above, or if he fits into a wider spectrum of horses as healers. . According to his owner / companion, Hassen Bouchakour, he started his career in dressage competitions, when he saw a spectator and wanted to spend time with him, and this person was still physically or mentally ill. Finally, Bouchakour decided to focus on the healing talents of the horse, especially in the oncology section of the Calais hospital.

Bouchakour himself is rather an exceptional person, to see the gifts of the horse and make it a mutual vocation. He does something that horse people do more and more, letting the horse decide what will be his life’s work. For Peyo, it’s helping humans at the end of their life.

Some commentators have compared Peyo to Oscar the death cat, who was keen to visit patients on the verge of death. It turned out that facility staff would see him on a patient’s bed and know that patient was ready to go. Peyo appears to have a similar knack for knowing when a human is near the end.

Conceptually, there is a big difference between a fluffy little cat and a huge towering horse. And yet, they’re both remarkably linked to the humans who need them. This ability to connect with a human, this tendency to form a bond that can last a lifetime and even death, is characteristic of horses that are socialized with humans. Horses have an aura around them, a feeling of calm and peace. There is nothing else like it.

Comments on the Guardian article about Peyo and his twitter feed has taken a direction that unfortunately happens too often on the internet. They turned negative and they piled up quickly. Commentator after commentator have complained about this horrible, terrifying and hideous beast. How dare this horrible creature invade the hospital rooms of the dying? Spare me, they said. Keep him away from me. I would literally be scared to death.

I didn’t commit, because I’m Internet years old and I don’t waste time that way. But all I could think of was, “Bless your heart, honey. he wouldn’t choose you. “

Peyo selects people who need what he has to give. For those who love horses, whatever their experience with real live equines, there is nothing more comforting than this great warm and breathable presence. Seeing this shape looming above you, feeling the softness of its breath, being able to touch that silk coat or that velvet nose, really makes these last few hours a little easier.

Dogs and cats are much more portable and much easier to bring – my own dog did this for my mom when she was in hospice care; she asked me to bring her when I visited, but for those who love horses, it is a real gift to see one in that of all places. Riders need to be surrounded by horses. When they are separated from them, it is actually painful.

Peyo brings this to terminally ill patients in Calais, as well as their families. The same goes for many others like him around the world. There is even a establishment in Tucson which was built around equitherapy.

Like I said, horses need horses. I could even say that people need horses, if they aren’t all entangled in fear and negativity. This calm, this gentle presence, can do a lot to heal what afflicts a human.

And the horses seem to need to give that too. It is the basis of therapeutic programs for humans with all kinds of diagnoses, both physical and psychological. Like Peyo, therapy horses do what they like to do. Even horses that haven’t been specially trained for this will be remarkably gentle with humans in need. That’s a big part of who they are.

Judith Tarr has always been passionate about horses. She sustains her habit by writing works of fantasy and science fiction as well as historical novels, many of which have been published as e-books. She wrote a guide for writers who want to write about horses: Writing horses: the art of doing things right. She lives near Tucson, Arizona with a herd of Lipizzaners, a clowder of cats, and a blue-eyed dog.
