Check out an exclusive sketch of Kacey Musgraves’ Ralph Lauren Met Gala look: “I’m a Girl on Horseback!”
In a great demonstration of understanding the mission, Kacey Musgraves has teamed up with an all-American label to create her 2021 Met Gala look.
On Monday night, the Grammy-winning singer, 33, honored the “American Independence” dress code by wearing a custom set from the Ralph Lauren collection including an asymmetrical handkerchief skirt, black jersey turtleneck top, belt in patent leather, knee high boots and a black clutch (as seen in the sketch below, shared exclusively with PEOPLE).

As for the inspiration behind her look, Musgraves said she “went for some sort of equestrian influence.”
“I mean, I’m a rider through and through,” she added with a laugh. “I’m from Texas. And also I just like the s—.”
Musgraves made her Met Gala debut in 2019, channeling a blonde bombshell barbie doll for the event.
Leaning into the performance’s “camp” theme, Musgraves wore a chewing-gum pink Moschino leather jacket dress, accessorized with a hairdryer pouch, feather boa, and long blonde curls that looked like to the iconic doll.

At the time, the country star’s stylist, Erica Cloud, called the set “nostalgic, iconic, playful.” The look was designed by the Camp King himself, Moschino Creative Director Jeremy Scott.

In an interview with PEOPLE in 2019, Cloud described Musgrave’s overall style vibe as “a little retro, a little pioneering.”
“Kacey is smart, fun, and creative, and I love portraying him with his wardrobe,” she told PEOPLE. “Even when her lyrics are soulful or melancholy, there is always hope and purpose behind them. She wears colors and textures with confidence and energy, and I think that speaks for her music too.”
