Elden Ring Horse: How to Summon Your Mount

The biggest change to the Soulsborne formula in Elden Ring is the introduction of a massive open world. You can fast travel between different checkpoints around the map, called Sites of Grace, but getting between them can be hard work if you don’t have a horse. Luckily, you have access to a horse called Torrent very early in the game. Here’s exactly how to get Torrent, how to mount and ride them.

How to Get a Horse in Elden Ring

To acquire Torrent, you must visit the Gatefront Site of Grace in Limegrave. It’s just west of the Gatefront Ruins, which leads to the first boss, Margit, the Fell Omen. Interact with Grace’s site and you will meet Melina, who will give you an item called the Spectral Seed Whistle. This item is used to summon Torrent.

We advise you to keep this item equipped at all times so that you can use it quickly whenever you want. Head to the Equipment menu, then go to your Quick Items and choose an empty slot to assign the Spectral Seed Whistle.

When using the Spectral Seed Whistle, your character immediately spawns on top of the horse, meaning you don’t have to go through button inputs to mount Torrent. It’s pretty handy and can be done in most areas outdoors. You cannot Torrent inside dungeons, castles or any other indoor sections.

For dismount, just use the Spectral Seed Whistle one more time. This will quickly make the horse disappear and you’ll be back on foot. Alternatively, you can click the left stick to drop down, which causes your character to jump up quickly, rather than down slowly. This can be a much more efficient way to dismount, especially if an enemy is nearby.

Speaking of which, you can attack enemies at the top of Torrent. To swing right use R1 or RB, and to swing left use L1 or LB. You can also use the triggers to use a charged attack on each side. Players can use flasks and other items, as well as magic while on top of the horse. Hold Circle or B to roll faster, but be aware that this will deplete stamina, as will attack.

One nifty thing about Torrent is the ability to double jump, which comes in handy when trying to scale cliffs or dodge enemies. Torrent technically has its own health bar, so keep that in mind when fighting enemies. It’s possible that Torrent will temporarily die, and if that happens, you’ll need to use a Vial of Crimson Tears to bring them back. Alternatively, resting at a grace site allows them to respawn.

You can also use Raisins to heal Torrent while riding them, but often this won’t be necessary due to the abundance of checkpoints around the map.
