How Fendi, Bottega, Gucci celebrate Chinese New Year


With China being a huge and important market for the luxury industry, it is only natural that designer brands make a special effort to mark the occasion.

The Chinese market is renowned for its importance in the luxury brand industry. According to the South China Morning Post, the continent accounts for more than a third of the global luxury goods market. And while global retail has been negatively affected by the pandemic, business isn’t so bad for luxury fashion given that many Chinese people continue to indulge in designer shopping.

So it’s no surprise that luxury brands are making special efforts to create bespoke campaigns and collections to grab the attention of Chinese people, and here are three that are making a splash for the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year and l Year of the Tiger:

To celebrate the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year, Bottega Veneta took over part of the Great Wall for an entire week in early January. “新春快乐,” which actually means Happy New Year, was the festive message displayed on a monumental digital screen that appeared in shades of Bottega green and tangerine (a symbol of luck in Mandarin).

Alongside the large facility, which is easily significant mileage for Bottega, the luxury brand has pledged to donate to support the renovation and maintenance of ‘Shanhai Pass’, the easternmost fortress. of the Great Wall of China, historically known as the ‘first passage under Heaven’.

To celebrate the Year of the Tiger, from February 1, 2022, the prestigious brand presents a special collection called Gucci Tiger: a wide selection of ready-to-wear and accessories for men and women. It features various interpretations of the animal known to be a mainstay of creative director Alessandro Michele’s collections. A new print – a reinterpretation of an archival drawing from the late 1960s by Vittorio Accornero, the artist and illustrator who created Gucci’s signature Flora design – features the tiger against a colorful background of greenery and flowers in a pastel palette.

The print is presented in an all-over variation ranging from outerwear and denim to shirts and dresses. A tiger and the inscription ‘Gucci Tiger’ can be found as a patch on jackets, jeans and sweaters, accompanied by a multicolored maxi monogram, the G Interlocking or the equestrian-inspired Web stripe. A huge range of sweatshirts and t-shirts also feature the tiger and logo elements in various iterations. On some pieces, the tiger is painted by hand or applied as a patch made with artisanal techniques of crochet and embroidery, making the styles unique.

Finally, Fendi, which recently opened its second store in Manila, is also joining the party with an exclusive Capsule Collection embodying the characteristics of people born in the Year of the Tiger: courageous, vigorous, active and enthusiastic.

Adding a vibrant twist to Fendi’s signature elements, the exclusive Spring Festival 2022 capsule collection features an orange tiger print animal motif inspired by the Siberian tigers found in the northeast region of China. The sleek monochrome black FF logo shirts echo the men’s pieces which feature a black and gray gradient variation of the iconic monogram. Appearing as a print or trim, the logo is applied to formal suits, but also to casual styles such as denim jackets, long-sleeved sweatshirts, knit cardigans and casual pants.

An exclusive edition of Rimowa luggage features a special blue Fendiness buckle.

Accessories include the Baguette Messenger, medium and small Fendiness backpacks, phone pouch, bucket and baseball cap, plus an exclusive edition of the natural aluminum suitcase made in collaboration with the luggage brand of Rimowa luxury, now with a special blue Fendiness buckle.
