After more than a year of waiting due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Met Gala 2021 took place last week on September 13, and while many celebrities did not disappoint with their fashion, others certainly have.

The Met Gala is an exclusive fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, attended by many of the biggest celebrities. Each year the gala has a theme in which attendees are expected to follow.

Some of the themes from previous years include: Camp 2019: Fashion Notes and Heavenly Bodies 2018: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination (my favorite Met Gala).

This year’s theme was “In America: A Fashion Lexicon”. The theme attracted many participants channeling American icons or making political statements.

With the Met Gala known as one of fashion’s biggest parties, let’s take a look at some of the best and worst looks of the night.

The best outfits

Kendall Jenner easily had one of the most stunning looks on the red carpet. Jenner wore a sheer Givenchy dress with jewels, taking an old Hollywood approach to the theme. The dress was inspired by a Givenchy dress that Audrey Hepburn wore in the movie “My Fair Lady”. Jenner’s look was both themed and gorgeous, putting her at the top of my best dressed category.

The duo of sisters Chloe and Halle Bailey did not disappoint at their first Met Gala. The sisters both wore Rodarte, Halle wearing a pink fringed bodysuit and Chloe wearing a white dress with a long train. Halle’s bodysuit was inspired by iconic American singer and actress Tina Turner, while it seems Chloe took an old Hollywood approach to the theme.

Lil Nas X, attending the Met Gala for the first time, presented three different looks. The rapper wore a Versace ensemble consisting of a large gold cape, gold armor and a crystal bodysuit covered in the signature Versace print.

X’s looks were bold and memorable, with the deeper sense of artist coming out of its shell in recent years.

Model Iman Abdulmajid had one of the biggest and most beautiful outfits at the Met Gala.

Iman wore a gold pantsuit topped with a gold feathered skirt and headpiece designed by Dolce & Gabbana x Harris Reed. The gaze symbolized “a ray of light after all the darkness we have felt,” according to Iman.

Iman Abdulmajid was definitely extravagant.

Last but not the least on my best dressed list is Yara Shahidi. The actress and model wore a beaded Christian Dior gown with matching elbow-length gloves and a beaded beanie.

Shahidi got the mission, paying homage to American fashion icon Josephine Baker with her look. Her dress was inspired by one of Baker’s custom Dior dresses, and it definitely did it justice.

Yara Shahidi’s outfit was perfect.

The worst outfits

Kim Petras certainly turned heads on the red carpet, but for all the wrong reasons. Petras wore a Collina Strada dress with a 3D horse head with a printed skirt. The look gave a lot of horse girl vibes which is pretty on the theme, but wasn’t very flattering and could have been executed better.

Kacey Musgraves also wore an equestrian-inspired outfit, but unlike Petras’s, it didn’t get much attention. Musgraves wore a Ralph Lauren ensemble consisting of a black top, metallic skirt and leather riding boots. Musgraves’ look was one of the blandest of the night, and as a country singer, she could have done a lot more with the theme.

Kacey Musgraves could have done so much more with her outfit.

Madison Beer looked gorgeous as always, but her dress looked like it was overdue and stopped at Macy’s prom dresses section along the way. Beer wore a dark green jeweled dress from Patricia Voto.

The dress was inspired by the look of Marilyn Monroe in the movie Men prefer blondes, so at least it was themed. Overall, it missed the mark and looked very disappointing for the Met Gala.

Kim Kardashian made a spectacular entrance in what looked like a Halloween costume. Kardashian wore an all-black Balenciaga look, which covered her from head to toe.

Kim Kardashian’s outfit was bold but didn’t quite hit the mark.

The outfit looked like a void on the red carpet; If the look was some sort of commentary on the theme, I’m not sure anyone got the message.

ASAP Rocky showed up at the Met in… a duvet? The rapper wore a large, colorful quilt from ERL’s spring collection. The look didn’t seem to relate to the theme and wasn’t very trendy, but hey, at least it was warm and cozy.
