Sotheby’s opens “Brilliant & Black: A Jewelry Renaissance”
Who: Sotheby’s
What: Brilliant & Black: a rebirth of jewelry exposure
Or: To see and buy in Sotheby’s New York galleries at 1334 York Avenue from September 17 to 26 and online via Online Marketplace Buy Now from Sotheby’s until October 10.
Why: Sotheby’s, in partnership with author and jewelry authority Melanie Grant, has created a one-of-a-kind exhibition titled Brilliant & Black: a rebirth of jewelry. Grant worked closely with Sotheby’s to curate the roster of over 20 black jewelry designers from around the world, from global icons like Art Smith to emerging designers like Johnny Nelson and Marei New York (earrings pictured here). As Grant explains, this moment for black jewelers is long overdue: from the mainland. The events of 2020 brought about a cultural shift where black talent is recognized for its brilliance and jewelry designers for their contribution. They have fascinating stories to tell. Almost all of the designers are new to Sotheby’s and most have created new pieces exclusively for the occasion, taking advantage of this decisive opportunity to share their know-how and creativity with a wide audience. The exhibit is fully purchasable – a first for the auction house – online until October 10 and in person at Sotheby’s galleries in New York City from September 17-26.
